Where to Camp in Northern Tunisia: Aïn Draham, Tabarka and Cap Bon

Northern Tunisia is the greenest region of the country: hills, forests, beaches and villages. It is also the most closely watched for fires, hence one simple rule: always check the permit before pitching your tent (see the camping rules).

Aïn Draham and Kroumirie: the mountain atmosphere

Aïn Draham, in the Jendouba governorate, is known for its forests, cooler climate and mid-mountain landscapes. It is an ideal spring and autumn destination for hiking and fresh air. Be careful: much of the area is forest, and camping has already been banned there in some years. Ask the CRDA or local hosts, and prefer an organized campsite.

Bring warm clothes even in spring: the altitude and humidity cool the evenings quickly, and mist can settle in early.

Tabarka and the north coast

Tabarka blends sea, forests and small harbours. It is a pleasant base in early autumn, when the sea is still warm and the crowds have gone. To sleep in a tent, look for structured campsites or private sites that accept tents, and you will avoid unpleasant surprises.

Cap Bon: the sea within reach of your tent

Cap Bon (Kélibia, El Haouaria, Korbous) offers wild coastal scenery that campers love: rocks, coves, sea wind. The wind is often strong there: check the weather and know how to guy your tent down properly (all the pegs, driven in deep).

A typical weekend in the north

  1. Day 1: leave early and arrive before the end of the afternoon to scout the site and pitch the tent in daylight.
  2. Day 2: hike or swim in the morning, cook on the stove, enjoy a quiet evening without a fire.
  3. Day 3: do a cleanup sweep (see leaving your campsite clean), then head home.
